Spring Clean and Wood Floors

Been doing lots of cleaning and gleaning through things around here. Have been doing spring cleaning and working mostly downstairs. It is nearly finished and then I will be moving upstairs to give some detailed cleaning to the blinds which are covered in thick dust, the floors a heavy mop and then move all of the furniture so the wood floors can be cleaned and treated. I love the wood floors and don't mind treating them. I treat them twice a year, once in preparation for the winter onslaught of water, mud and melting snow and then after winter in order to give them some TLC after the long winter. They shine so nicely and deeply after they have been treated. Our household is not easy on these old wood floors either. Between human foot traffic and the animals tracking dirt and mud and wet into the house, these wood floors are put through it hard. But they continue to withstand the use and continue to shine through it all. A few squeeks and creeks here and there but that just adds to their character and their story. After the wood floors are treated then I am done with the spring cleaning. Then I think it is on to taking an easy summer.

  1. I think you have it right. I on the other hand - have started my spring cleaning outdoors. I am wondering what you treat the floors with??

    1. I use the Quick Shine floor cleaner and finish by Holloway House. It cleans very nicely (the only areas that are bad are the dinning area which is right next to our slider door to the back yard and the front door which is right across the house from the dinning and slider.) the remaining wood is in the living area and bedrooms which I rarely treat or clean. When I lift up our area rugs the floors still gleam and shine almost like new (these floors are 60 plus years old). But the entry area and dinning has heavy traffic and this is where the floor needs to be cleaned most. The finish is one that will not strip or build on top of the already sealed areas of the floor and where the top seal has been warn off of our floor due to heavy traffic (right at the threshold of the kitchen, slider and front door) this finish helps luster those places back up for it to shine like the rest of the floor and helps to protect the wood. I used to use the Johnsons wax on our floors at another house but Quick Shine does the same and better with no build up and you don't have to get down on your hands and knees. A sponge mop for cleaning and application work great.

  2. Great minds think alike. I don't have wood floors but my blinds have a years worth of dust on them. A good job on a rainy day. I discovered that a damp Magic Eraser works beautifully on blinds. Ceiling fans too.

Drat! Now I need to put the ceiling fan on the list to clean too...

    1. LOL. Me too on the ceiling fan! Thanks for the tip on cleaning the blinds and fan with the magic eraser. I am going to give it a try. I hate cleaning the blinds. Anything to help make it a little easier.

    1. I would of been outside too over being inside and cleaning. We didn't have sunshine here this weekend and the wind picked up pretty good too. It was a good weekend to play it mellow and be inside.

  4. I love a wood floor too! My parents have some wide pine boards, and I love it. They have lots of dings and scratches, but it just gives it character! I look forward to having real wood floors one day too!
