I promised my son that if he wanted we would pick up a few more chicks over spring break. He was up for that. So at weeks end we finally made our way to the other feed store to collect the peeps. I am glad that we waited. We were able to find some Black Australorps and Welsummer chicks. The Australorps have been the first choice all along but couldn't find any until today and the Welsummers were so different looking and just so dang cute that we picked some of those up too.
Do I feel like I am addicted to chicks? You betcha! I must stop here and buy no more. This could become a very serious problem. I will have no problem finding uses for all these eggs either by cooking or baking with them (my guys love eggs) but I also intend on sharing the wealth as well. If I continue to bring home chicks I will run into trouble. I will run out of space and spend a small fortune in feed. So as much as I would love to continue with this addiction I must call it quits. At least for now.
This is the first year in many that I haven't got any chicks. It is very, very hard for they are so dang cute. But they do grow and you are right out of room. Have fun watching you babies grow!
ReplyDeleteWe most certainly will. My son has all ready made comments about our 3 week old chicks changes. They will all grow into gorgeous birds. All of us are looking forward to eggs. I can't keep eggs in the house. As soon as I bring them home they are gone!
DeleteOh I wish I lived closer, I would love some fresh eggs. Have a blessed Easter.
ReplyDeleteI just googled the Australorps to see what they look like all grown up and they are gorgeous! They're pretty cute as babies too! Stupid question here - do the eggs all taste the same or do the different variety of chicken eggs taste differently?
ReplyDeleteNope not a stupid question. All the eggs from backyard chickens, local farm chickens or organic eggs(the expensive brown eggs you see at your local grocer) no matter the color or size taste so good. There is this certain rich, full, yummy taste about them. The average white egg that you find at any grocery store that are from the commercial production lines that crank out the eggs are just eggs. Not rich or full or really all that yummy just eggs. So yes there are eggs that taste differently but not by their shell color. More or less it is how well the hen is treated and cared for during egg creation. That is where the difference lies.
DeleteI should add also that the variety of hen does not affect the taste of the egg either. Again it is all in the care and treatment of the hen.
DeleteThey are adorable! We were at the feed store last week and it's so hard not to bring a bunch home! Would you share some of your egg recipes? I'm running out of clever ways to use our eggs!
ReplyDeleteI would love to. I'll share what we do with them. How we use them etc. Hopefully you can find something new or untried.
DeleteWe are all addicted to something! I have five Welsummers. They give me the most beautiful dark brown eggs! You'll love them!
ReplyDeleteCan not wait!!!
DeleteOh how sweet they are!
ReplyDeleteThey're certainly cute!!
ReplyDeleteThis is our second year without chickens... and we miss them.
We have been working on this homestead for a year now, and while we have made tremendous progress, the brick barn is still not quite ready for chickens.
We're hoping it will be soon.
Thankfully, we have a great source for fresh eggs where we live; they do taste better than store bought eggs :)
How many chicks do have total? Do you have a chicken coop, or barnyard to keep them in ?
We have 11 right now. I would like a few more Black Australorps since they are such good layers. We'll see though. May just go with what we have and add more next spring. No barnyard here. I wish there was but it's just a really big backyard. So they will be in a coop with a run.
